Leah

The bridesmaid dress was a tad too long for her, but that problem was easily solved with a shoe swap. The heels were killing her, and her cheeks were sore from smiling for so long. Leah was used to wearing uncomfortable shoes of varying cuts and heights, but whoever had designed that particular pair had clearly missed their calling in making torture devices.

The other women didn’t seem fazed at all as they lined up for photo after photo.

“All right, I think we’re done with wedding party group shots,” the photographer announced.

Leah sighed and pushed a loose curl back behind her ear. She hiked the strapless dress back up her chest and re-centered the sparkling gem-encrusted belt. No matter what she did it kept trying to go sideways. She was going to have to see if there was a seamstress on the ship who could have it altered for her by tomorrow.

“Let’s take five minutes then we’ll pair everyone off so we can do group couple shots,” the photographer added.

In a burst of excited chatter the girls broke apart and mingled for a moment. Leah took the inch of freedom and ran with it, wandering away from the group. She cast a meaningful glance at Gray, then headed toward the back of the overgrown wall of plants that bordered the conservatory’s rounded center.

“It’s not too late to tell him,” she said in a hushed whisper. “You could just take him aside and explain. Before I end up in even more of their wedding photos.”

Gray ran a hand through his hair, then rubbed his jaw. “Roy would think it was hilarious, and he wouldn’t care. That’s one of the reasons why we work so well together. He doesn’t care about propriety, not like m—”

She stopped surveying the people around her, her attention snapping back to him as he left the rest of his sentence unsaid. They stood in an awkward silence until the photographer called them back, pairing people off according to his list and arranging them by height and coloring.

Leah and Gray were placed next to the bride and groom with the maid of honor, and her groomsman took up the other side with the rest of the bridal party ringing them.

“I’m sorry,” Gray whispered. “I didn’t . . .”

Leah squeezed his arm and relaxed into him while the photographer kept taking photos, his camera drone fluttering about and snapping away as it captured them from multiple angles.

“Couples only,” the photographer announced.

The single bridal party members dispersed leaving just the bride and groom, two other sets, and themselves to finish taking photos. The photographer called out various poses and instructions. Gray’s arms wrapped around her, pulling her in tighter to his body.

She put her hand on his chest, enjoying the way that his smell enveloped her as he held her close.

Sun-dappled woods.

The scent of it eased the slight ache in her chest. She glanced at the bride and groom, noting their posture and trying her best to mimic it for the photographer’s sake.
